Recital Policy

All degree-required recitals have two main components:

  1. Pre-Recital Hearing
  2.  Recital

Recital Committee:

The recital committee consists of three faculty members. Recital committees will be chaired by the primary professor. The second member will be from the area and the third member may be a music faculty member-at-large approved to participate by the primary professor.

All committee members must be present in person for the pre-recital hearing. For the final recital, only the committee chair is required to attend in person; the other two committee members may either attend the recital in person or review a recording (livestream or other) to evaluate the recital as soon as possible after it occurs.

Pre-Recital Hearing:

The pre-recital hearing (PRH) must take place no later than 3 weeks prior to the student’s recital date.

The PRH will last 30-60 minutes. Committee members may request any music from the recital program, with flexibility for chamber music/interdisciplinary works (three or more players/singers in the ensemble) that may be challenging to schedule for the PRH. In those cases, a recent recording is acceptable for review by the committee. Creating this recording is entirely the student’s responsibility and must be submitted to the committee by the time of the PRH.

The committee will offer written and/or verbal feedback to the student after the PRH is completed.

Pre-Recital Hearing Location:

During the scheduling process, the PRH location will be assigned to the student by the SOMD scheduling office based on availability and the student’s needs. The designated space will be in the Frohnmayer Music Building. However, if a student has received permission to conduct the PRH in the professor’s studio, they may indicate this preference on the scheduling form.

Pre-Recital Hearing Evaluation:

All committee members are required to attend the PRH in person. Following the PRH, the committee will evaluate whether the recital is deemed “passed” or “not passed.” In the event of a “not passed” result, the calendar hold for the recital will be released, and the student will need to restart the recital scheduling process.

Following the PRH, a DocHub evaluation form will be sent to the committee members to confirm the results. Upon completion, the advising office will share the finalized form with both the student and the committee.

A “Pass” verdict means that the committee members have determined the recital material to be adequately prepared, and the student is considered ready to present the recital. There might be one or two minor things that can be addressed in lessons leading up to the recital.

A “No Pass” decision indicates that the committee believes the student’s recital material is not adequately prepared, and it is deemed unreasonable for the student to address the necessary fixes leading up to the recital.

The Recital:

Degree-required recitals are not permitted during finals week of any term. The deadline for performing a degree-required recital in any given term is Sunday of week 10, which is the Sunday before Finals Week. Additionally, degree-required recitals are not allowed during the summer term.

Recital Material:

The student will collaborate with their primary faculty member to select suitable material for the recital. 

Recital Location:

The recital must take place on the University of Oregon campus. Degree-required recitals held off-campus will not be approved.

Most degree-required recitals should occur in Beall Hall, Tykeson Rehearsal Space (Berwick Hall), and Frohnmayer Music Building Rooms 190, as these are the only spaces equipped with video and live-streaming capabilities. Audio recording can be facilitated in all rooms.

Students are required to choose a recital time that is designated as a recital slot in the SOMD Productions Calendar. Unfortunately, time slots outside of these designated recital slots may not be accommodated. It is crucial to adhere to the specified recital slots to ensure smooth scheduling and staffing required for degree recitals.

Dress Rehearsal:

All students completing a recital will have the opportunity to reserve the space for a dress rehearsal. Please note that dress rehearsals will not be staffed, meaning students are responsible for organizing and conducting their rehearsal themselves.

It is optional for all committee members to attend the dress rehearsal.

Recital Fees & Recording:

There is a mandatory SOMD recital fee that applies to all degree-required recitals. This recital fee includes an audio recording of the recital. For those interested in video recording and livestreaming, additional costs apply.

To ensure that all audio and video requirements are fulfilled, students must complete the Information & Arrangements Form at least two weeks before the recital date. Failure to do so may result in the student’s requests not being accommodated. It’s crucial to submit the form on time to guarantee that all recording needs are adequately met for the recital.

Recital Evaluation:

The chair of the committee is required to be present at the recital. After the recital, a DocHub form will be sent to the committee chair to confirm the successful completion of the recital.
